As high school football season comes to an end it seems as if local football program, Armwood Highschool, has found themselves in a position they are very comfortable with. Heading to the state championship to face a new foe, Northwestern. Competing in class 6A, it seems as each year Armwood would make it to the state championship to play Miami powerhouse, Carol City. But, with Carol City being eliminated during the playoffs this season the Hawks will face another Miami school when battling Northwestern High School on Saturday for their first state championship title since 2004. Falling to Tampa Bay Tech in the opening game of the season, the future didn’t look to be this bright for Armwood. But, the Hawks remained undefeated throughout the season, outscoring opponents 502-130.

After losing starting quarterback position to freshman Trevor Lawrence, former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant is expected to announce which school he plans on transferring to on Tuesday, December 3rd. After much speculation Bryant has narrowed his schools down to five: Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, Missouri, and North Carolina. Many people have released statements saying Bryant’s mind has been made up, but he assured the media by saying ““Nobody has separated. … I have not narrowed it down; all those schools are still in my decision. No one has narrowed it down yet.” He also made sure people realized that this wasn’t going to only effect his future for the next year, but his future for the rest of his life. “I’m just making sure I’m keeping my eyes and ears open while I’m going out to these different schools, different places, because it’s a business decision. “I want to make sure I get this right. I’m just making sure that I surround myself around good people and just get in the perfect situation where I’m able to showcase my ability and compete at a high level as well.”

Newlywed Justin Bieber apparently isn’t sticking with his previous statement that he is holding off music for a while. After recently purchasing a home in native country Canada, Bieber said he and new wife Hailey Baldwin would be taking time off work to enjoy some off time and enjoy married life together. Not even a week later Bieber took to Instagram to post a picture of a young girl saying that “Justin Bieber stopped making music forever because he decided he was tired.” He captioned the video “Don’t believe everything you hear sweet little girl. You’ll be hearing something from me sooner than you think.” After posting this, the next week Justin was seen leaving a Beverly Hills recording studio to meet wife Hailey Baldwin (Bieber) for lunch. The “no-working” pact didn’t seem to last long as Hailey was seen walking in her first runway show since marriage on December 2nd.

On July 24th, after reaching six years of sobriety, Demi Lovato was found unconscious in her Hollywood home after taking oxycodone laced with fentanyl. After completing 60 days sober in rehab Demi broke her silence by posting a picture on Instagram at a voting booth simply saying “Go Vote!” When released from rehab Demi was seen out with fashion designer Henry Levi. A source close to Demi assures people that the two are just close friends, and her #1 goal right now is to remain sober. Following those goals to remain sober included Lovato removing people from her life that bring her difficult relationships. Along with removing those difficult relationships included Lovato unfollowing star studded friends Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas, and Iggy Azalea. A source close to Demi says she is taking her sobriety day by day, and realizes it isn’t going to be easy. But, considers each day she is sober an accomplishment.

Newsy Story

For my Newsy Article I’m focusing on “Americans Are Dying Younger Because of Drug Overdose and Suicides” by Andrea Gonzales. I have chose this article to focus on because I feel as if this society has been so influenced by suicide and drugs. It seems as if you can’t listen to a song without drugs being glorified, and each day it feels like another person has taken their own precious life. We must form together to put an end to both of these awful events.

The final 4 college football teams have been released, which means the playoffs are ready to be begin. #1 Alabama will face #4 Oklahoma, while #2 Clemson will face #3 Notre Dame. The games will both be played on New Years, and the winners of each will go against each other in the National Championship on January 7th in Atlanta, Georgia. When looking at it from the television perspective, it seems as if Oklahoma doesn’t stand a chance against Alabama. But, when you look at the statistics, Oklahoma could indeed give Alabama a test. With the #1 offense in College football, Alabama hasn’t seen a team this season who can move the ball quite like Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray. With Notre Dame’s defense being ranked #22 in the country, it’s going to be difficult to stop #3 ranked offense Clemson with freshman QB Trevor Lawrence. In the end, I believe it will be the same matchup over the years with Clemson and Alabama battling for the National Championship.

In my opinion NEWSY is a website used to make young adults better understand the news that’s going on around them. I think that NEWSY points out so many topics in this society that local and national news stations refuse to cover because they’re too scared of what others may say. I also like how the people who are posting the stories aren’t necessarily “professional” journalist. They are young and fresh and aren’t forced to say or write anything they don’t believe in, bringing a new outlook and honest opinion to different stories going on. Other than just news stories, I like the fact that each story comes with a video. You can see the person tell you their point of view and hear the passion in their voice, instead of reading it on the computer and being set to decide for yourself whether or not you are agreeing or disagreeing on the imposed topic.

It is believed that over 750,000 college students today are involved in a sorority or fraternity at their university. Each year participants participate in a week referred to as “rush week” to visit each different Greek life offered at their school and see which they feel would fit their personality assets the most. Recently, I encountered a group of girls who are in a sorority at the University of South Florida and overheard them speaking about the different girls who came into their home for rush week. Sororities aren’t cheap, when joining you’re estimating spending thousands of dollars for dues. It was the week after rush week, so the different Greek life had begun to make lists deciding who was in and who was out. I was with one of my close friends when three of her sorority members called her asking her opinion. I could hear them saying “we have to accept her because she’s a junior and they get whatever sorority is their first pick.” Apparently, this wasn’t a girl they wanted to accept. They all responded, “accept her, and we’ll just bully her until she decides to drop out.” We’re at an age where the labels we’re given are going to stick in our brains forever. When these girls join this sorority, they’re planning on joining a group of people who will be their sisters forever, not joining a group of people who are going to verbally abuse them to their breaking point. If you’re considering joining a sorority, my goal is not to discourage you about your decision, but to make you more aware. Make sure you get to know everyone who is a part of it, and make sure they’re genuine people

Kate Spade, 55, took her own life on June 5th, 2018. Kate Spade will be well remembered to most for her successful self-titled company “Kate Spade New York.” Spade’s husband, Andrew, released a statement saying “Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives. We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy.” However, it was released that Kate’s sister was aware she was in need of help but refused to go get treatment due to the fact she thought it would hurt her brand. Husband Andrew wanted to make sure to clear up that he wasn’t to blame for her suicide either, although they were working through a split. “We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce. We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how. We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break.” For anyone who feels as if they are going through a tough time battling depression or any other mental health concerns, remember there are people available to help you through your concerns, and you are not alone. Kate’s funeral was held on June 21st, 2018 in her hometown of Kansas City.

Hyperlocal News is news that focuses strictly on a small area. I think these types of writing can be beneficial because they show details of a specific situation, in a smaller concept. On the Columbia Journalism Review I read about a student from the Savannah College of Art and Design. A story that simple wouldn’t be found anywhere else on a major news website. As a high school yearbook student we were taught to not lean towards the popular kids, but the kids who weren’t as well known so that when people got their book they could read about their classmates who didn’t stand out as much. I think that’s what these types of stories do as well, point out the things we wouldn’t regularly associate ourselves with.
